Understanding Shahadah the first pillar of islam

The Shahādah (الشهادة) is the first pillar of Islam and the gateway into the faith. At JH Quran Academy, we emphasize that the Shahādah is not just a phrase—it is a profound declaration that defines a Muslim’s belief, lifestyle, and eternal purpose.

In this article, we will explore its meaning, foundations in the Qur’an and Sunnah, conditions of acceptance, and its role in a believer’s daily life.

Second Kalima

1. What is the Shahādah?

The Shahādah is the testimony of faith, consisting of two parts:

  • أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله“I bear witness that there is no god but Allah.”
  • وأشهد أن محمداً رسول الله“And I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”

This declaration affirms two essential principles:

  1. Tawḥīd (Oneness of Allah) – worship belongs to Allah alone.
  2. Risālah (Prophethood) – Muhammad ﷺ is His final Messenger.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever testifies that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, Allah will make Paradise forbidden for him (i.e. he will not enter Hell eternally).”

(Sahih al-Bukhari Book of Knowledge (Kitab al-‘Ilm) – Hadith 128)

2. Qur’anic Foundations of the Shahādah

Though the full formula is not found in one verse, its components are repeated throughout the Qur’an.

  • On Tawḥīd:

“So know, [O Muhammad], that there is no deity except Allah.”
(Surah Muhammad, 47:19)

  • On Prophethood:

“Muhammad is not the father of [any] one of your men, but [he is] the Messenger of Allah and the seal of the prophets.”
(Surah Al-Ahzab, 33:40)

3. Importance of the Shahādah in a Muslim’s Life

a) Entry into Islam

Uttering the Shahādah with sincerity is the only requirement to become Muslim.

b) Integrated in Worship

It is recited in the Adhān, Iqāmah, and within Salah during Tashahhud.

c) First and Last Words

  • It is whispered into the ear of a newborn.
  • Muslims hope it will be their final words at death.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever’s last words are ‘Lā ilāha illallāh’ will enter Paradise.”
(Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith 3116)

d) The Key to Salvation

It is the foundation of success in the Hereafter, provided it is declared truthfully and sincerely.

4. Conditions of a Valid Shahādah

Scholars derived seven conditions that make the Shahādah valid:

  1. Knowledge (‘Ilm): Understanding its meaning. (Qur’an 47:19)
  2. Certainty (Yaqīn): Free of doubt. (Qur’an 49:15)
  3. Acceptance (Qabūl): Accepting its requirements. (Qur’an 2:285)
  4. Submission (Inqiyād): Living by it. (Qur’an 31:22)
  5. Truthfulness (Ṣidq): Saying it sincerely. (Qur’an 29:2–3)
  6. Sincerity (Ikhlāṣ): Purely for Allah. (Qur’an 39:2–3)
  7. Love (Maḥabbah): Loving it and its people. (Qur’an 2:165)

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“No one says ‘Lā ilāha illallāh’ sincerely, from his heart, but Allah makes Hellfire forbidden for him.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 128; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 32)

5. Practical Lessons for Students of Quran

At JH Quran Academy, we guide our students to:

  • Reflect on meaning while reciting.
  • Apply it in daily life by worshipping Allah alone.
  • Follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as proof of true belief.

Conclusion

The Shahādah is not only a declaration—it is a lifelong commitment. It defines a Muslim’s faith, worship, and salvation. At JH Quran Academy, we teach students to not only recite it correctly but to live its meaning every day.

May Allah make our hearts firm on Lā ilāha illallāh, Muḥammadur Rasūlullāh.
